St. Croix is seen from Landsat ETM on the 12 January 2002.
St. Croix
The island is part of the American Virgin Islands and it has
a long history of colonization through Spain, United Kingdom,
the Netherlands, France, Malta and Denmark. In 1917 Denmark sold
the island to the USA.
The island has an area around 200 km2 which corresponds to
the size of the island Møn. Approximately 50.000 people live
there. In comparison 11.000 people live on Møn.
The Landsat ETM satellite image is from 12 January 2002 and
the image confirms that the island is densely populated. Notice
the square structures in land use that traces back to the
history as a colony. At that time the land use planning was made
with a ruler and right angles. You can view the map from the
time of the Danish colony at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:St_Croix_map.jpg
