Bellona is seen from the QuickBird satellite.
The image is from the QuickBird satellite and it shows the
northern tip of Bellona that is one of the Solomon Islands.
Bellona is a very long island (10 x 2 km) with a ’main street’
that is seen clearly in the image. All houses are located around
the ‘main street’. Each household has a very varied agricultural
pattern with small fields, gardens and orchards. The island is a
former atoll that is lifted 50 m above sea level and it is flat
on the top. Hence occasionally it is rather windy.
In the QuickBird image one can faintly see living hedges
towards the ocean at all directions. Professor (emeritus) Sofus
Christiansen, Institute of Geography, University of Copenhagen
has conducted a large study of the sustainable cultivation at
Bellona since the early 1960ties. Institute of Geography has in
connection with Galathea 3 resumed the studies at Bellona in
cooperation with Sofus Christiansen.
Technical information:
It is a multi-spectral image from QuickBird with a resolution
of 2.4 m by 2.4 m per pixel, and hence it is not in the full
spatial image resolution of 0.6 m by 0.6 m. |
